Forum: etree Subject: Issues with new format !!

I know I am just an old Deadhead who is out of touch with the new innovations in high tech, but it seems to me that this new format is not nearly as user friendly or convenient as it was a few days ago. These are some of my issues with the new site.

1) The "Live Music Forum" only seems to go back a few hours. It used to be that there were up to a couple of days worth of the most recent threads listed. This made it easier to scan and see if a current issue was currently being discussed. It seems that one consequence of this is that, more than usual, there appear to be new threads being created that deal with issues that are just a few hours old and as a result we are getting more of those annoying "this issue was addressed in a previous thread, see http:....." posts. I know you can click the "view more posts" icon, but, human nature being what it is, many people will just post a new thread and let Diana or others either answer or refer them to another link. Personally I log onto the site a few times a week and, in the old format, was able to read most of the threads that were posted, I feel l.ike I am missing out on some interesting threads and discussions. If the forum was changed to include more recent threads, perhaps there wouldn't be as many redundant threads.

2) I miss the old "recent posts" feature. I really enjoyed seeing what the most recent messages were, and often there would be new takes or information on previous threads that were of interest to me and led me to new shows or artists.

3) I also liked the old format of splitting a particular artist's shows into yearly blocks. It was very easy and convenient to navigate around, and especially for artists with large archives, you could view smaller more manageable samplings of shows. Luckily for me, because the GD were my main interest, I did have that particular link on my "favorites" list and it is still accessible in the old format at:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Grateful%20Dead

I assume that the other artists' archives are still available in this format as well, and this may have been discussed in recent posts, but I wouldn't know because the "Live Music Archive Forum" has been cut down to the last few hours. (see issue #1) If anyone has the links for other artists, particularly Little Feat, PL&F, Kimmock, Yonder Mtn, Hot Buttered Rum (to name just a few), please let me know

4) Again I don't see a recent thread for this so bear with me if this has been addressed ad nauseum. Are we going to be able to download lossless GD audience shows on this site, or has that been dropped? Are we going to be allowed to download any GD Aud shows in any format? If there is something I am missing on the new format that allows me to do this please inform.

I know that there is still some tweaking going on with the new format (I was lucky enough to be online during the few hours that those threads were on the list) and I hope that some of these issues are being addressed.

QED, eh? ;)

The "recent posts" think was pretty much an old-system hack AFAIK? I don't personally know if it can come back. You're right the couple hr old thing is just because of everyone saying the same things in a couple hr. The same happened with the GD flap even under the old system. It was just a darned lot of posts, like now.

Here's one backdoor to show huge swaths of posts for the tough times (a url sytle not really linked anywhere except in a forum post from Jon one time):
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/forums-searchresults.php?searchForum=yes&search=etree

Here's another through the front door: go to archive.org front page, look at the forum scroll, click "more" on the forum's title bar, get
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/posts-display-new.php?limit=50
and manually increment as needed. Lucky for us windbags, other forums don't have as many posts in that scroll.

As for the other points, you can also search the forum too: Of the top of my head, for 3), try: browse
For 4), try: zip

You will see some recent ones from the last couple days or hours covering those issues.

Totally feel you man... there are some things that I am not to like about archive... one thing is the browse option. I have linked this site.. the old site which was excellent!

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree

Now... it's by genre (which, is nice) or by the page that displayes artists on that yellow-background page... which I might add has never shown all the things that one can search for by a particular search item.

I do like the new audio box that I have seen in the corner of some shows which you just click on a song and it plays! Cooool stuff. I just hope ARCHIVE does not turn into one of these virus hounds / pop arena.

Other things too but I will post as I come across them..

Archive you are doing a great job though... hope you take active users ideas into account!

Thanks! peace

Unless you're smart enough to spot the "View more forum posts" link just below the forum.

It was handy, unless you wanted some other way of grouping the shows, in which case, it was useless. The new system is much more flexible. And anyway, the Archive covers a WHOLE lot more than just live music. You might want to read the following:

i bet you are one of them rude kids who sit all day on the pc downloadin shows you never saw. some ppl arent adaptable to change. b4 you get rude you should think of that first.the issue is the same for all, no sufficient time to adjust . the new setup is just that new ,not many ppl have seen a setup like this . i would never pay to download anything when i could just go see the show and tape it for my own personal consumption. to be honest this site has never run well and im sure even with a new setup the same problems will arise. way to many cooks spoil the soup.i dont know you from squat but if you said rude crap to me in person id have to take up the issue with you.lets use a lil common sence when directing responses to these threads. you never know when someone takes it personally have a good day peace

Well, first, I'm not a rude kid, I'm a rude old fart.

And let me get this straight. You're saying that it's ok to be rude to the people who donate their time and energy to make this site work, but it's not ok to be rude to those who are themselves rude, and who whine a lot and (usually) contribute nothing? I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. Not that I think I was particularly rude, in any case. Especially not compared to some (most?) of the critics of the new system.

Note that I was one of the first to start pointing out problems with the new system:

http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=60452

But I did so politely. I did not start out by accusing anyone of trying to destroy the Archive or ruin people's lives or any of the other nonsense I've seen tossed around in the last couple of days. If my patience seems to have worn thin, it's because I like and respect the people who maintain the Archive, and am tired of seeing them insulted and harrassed!

no man im sayin its not nice to be rude period and there is alot of it in here for sure. there are other ways to speak to ppl so they get your point. dont resond to the rude ones is a start.things arent running smooth(and havent in some time) and after all we are the users . we want it more friendly in use and ppl.do you just go out and buy a random car, well think of it as this is wat we want since we use it. maybe the mods can back us up maybe they cant. sooner or later it wont be cost effective for anyone.esp if we all find other sites now will it. wasnt the grateful dead about peace and unity. this isnt peaceful its annoying like a wsp show lol

> dont resond to the rude ones is a start.

Indeed, yet you seemed to think you were justified in responding to me (fairly rudely, I might add).

> we are the users

Yes, we are. Are you trying to suggest that only users who whine about change have opinions that matter? Why doesn't a user like me, who thinks the Archive is doing a great job, considering their limited resources, have a right to an opinion too? And a right to be upset at what's going on (by which I mean the whining and insults at the Archive and its volunteers)?

edit: p.s. this is the Internet Archive, not the "Grateful Dead Archive." So what the Grateful Dead were about hardly seems relevent. Anyway, I'm done with this thread.

yup just as i thought you are the only one who uses this site and your rude opinion is all that counts and you deadheads are the ones who complain the most. when it becomes a grateful dead site (soon i hope) we wont hear from you any longer. am i correct not to be rude myself but you must not contradict yourself since youre a user and not a mod .to bad only myself thinks peace is relevent here esp since the mods are adults and are capable of defending themselves, being rude is just a reflection of all that is wrong with this site
